The first mention of a mill in Wentzwiller dates back to 1289.
At the end of the 18th century, two mills were present in the village, one known as "du haut" (upper) and the other known as "du bas" (lower). They were useful for the more than 70 active farmers in 1929. These were wheat mills that operated with the force of two small waterfalls, which caused two heavy stone millstones to rotate.
Modernized in 1791 and again in 1798, the "moulin du bas" stopped functioning in 1940 after the French troops blew up the millrace. It was demolished in 2014. Only the lintel of the door remains from the building, and you can still see the water channel that powered the mill mechanism.
The moulin du bas was in operation until the beginning of World War II, then it was destroyed because nowadays you can buy flour in supermarkets and there are not many farmers in the area anymore.
